Out of the Blue – improving maternal mental health

Every now and again, a project comes together with a bit of magic - and our most recent production is a case in point.  Over the past two and a half years, we've been working with child health charity Best Beginnings to develop and produce a series of films and digital content on mental health in pregnancy and following the birth of a baby - Out of the Blue. Mental health problems are a hidden epidemic affecting nearly one in five women who have a baby - often going unrecognised and untreated, with serious consequences.  That's what Out of the Blue is seeking to change, through the powerful stories of families who have experienced and recovered from mental illness. Taking a camera into another person’s life and asking them to share their story is both a privilege and a responsibility in any circumstances. In making Out of the Blue, this was heightened by the nature of the stories being shared – asking our contributors to recount some of the most difficult and often distressing experiences of their lives. It has been inspiring and humbling to work with these courageous women and their families. With a project this long in the gestation, it would be easy to lose momentum - but in the case of Out of the Blue, it has been quite the opposite.  While we were in production, Best Beginnings was selected by the Royal Foundation as one of the eight charities operating in the field of mental health to be part of the Heads Together campaign, spearheaded by Princes William and Harry, and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.  The Duchess spoke movingly at the launch of Out of the Blue and spent an hour with some of the families who appear in our films and were able to be there on the day. It’s wonderful to see this important project come to fruition – the end of our role as producers, and the beginning of their journey into the wider world to raise awareness and provide information and support to families, and important new training resources for professionals, for years to come. https://www.bestbeginnings.org.uk/out-of-the-blue
